Sky-Watcher Dobson 12" Classic Telescope (SW-1304)

The Sky-Watcher Dobson 12" Classic is a high-performance Newtonian reflector telescope featuring a large 305 mm aperture, designed for demanding astronomy enthusiasts. Available at SkyHunters, this model combines exceptional light-gathering capability, thermal stability provided by its Pyrex primary mirror, and a stable alt-azimuth Dobson mount, making it outstanding for deep-sky observations, nebulae, galaxies, star clusters, and planetary details.

Key Advantages

  • Large 305 mm (12") Aperture: Delivers 1898x the light-gathering capacity of the human eye for deep-sky object observations.
  • Pyrex Parabolic Primary Mirror: Low thermal expansion glass minimizes mirror deformation and speeds up cooling time.
  • 9-Point Floating Cell: Supports the main mirror evenly to eliminate mechanical distortion under its own weight.
  • Protective Quartz Coating: Aluminum layer is protected with silicon dioxide to resist oxidation and scratching.
  • Stable Dobson Mount: Provides a low center of gravity, rigidity, low vibration, and smooth manual motion on both axes.
  • 2" Crayford Focuser with 1.25" Adapter: Smooth backlash-free operation, compatible with Sky-Watcher autofocuser drives.

Product Description

Optical System and Pyrex Mirror
This telescope is built using the Newtonian reflector optical design. The parabolic primary mirror features a 305 mm diameter and 1500 mm focal length (f/4.9 focal ratio). It is coated with aluminum and protective quartz layer to guard against oxidation and scratching. All Sky-Watcher Dobson 8" and larger models come standard with a PYREX primary mirror—a low thermal expansion glass that yields superior image quality compared to standard glass mirrors during thermal adaptation. In the 12" model, the mirror is supported on a proven 9-point floating cell. The large secondary mirror (70 mm diameter) features identical protective coatings. The f/4.9 focal ratio delivers bright images at low magnifications with wide fields of view, ideal for wide-field nebulae and galaxy observing.

Mount and Focuser
The optical tube rests on an alt-azimuth Dobson mount—a simple, highly stable design that allows smooth movement in altitude and azimuth. The tube is suspended on both sides in a fork arm, while the top portion rotates on the base. Its low center of gravity and rigid materials provide superior stability over equatorial mounts. The 2" Crayford focuser operates smoothly without play and includes a 2" extension tube and 1.25" adapter/extension (used separately). The focuser is compatible with Sky-Watcher autofocuser drives.

Observational Capabilities

1. Solar System:

  • Lunar surface features smaller than 1 km in size.
  • Sunspots with complex structure and clear photospheric granulation (with appropriate solar filter).
  • All planets of the Solar System.
  • Phases of Mercury and Venus; atmospheric detail on Venus visible with a neutral grey filter.
  • Surface structures on Mars and seasonal polar cap variations.
  • Multiple cloud bands on Jupiter, Galilean moons, shadow transits, and moon transits across the disk.
  • Saturn's ring system with Cassini division, atmospheric belts, and several smaller moons.
  • Uranus and Neptune visible as distinct blue disks.
  • Movement of asteroids against background stars and faint comet structures.

2. Stars:

  • Approximately 6.5 million stars across the sky down to magnitude 13–14.
  • Double and multiple stars separated by more than 0.5 arcseconds.
  • Vivid natural colors visible in many stars.

3. Deep-Sky Objects:

  • All Messier catalog objects and hundreds of NGC and IC objects.
  • Hundreds of globular clusters resolved into individual stars all the way to their cores.
  • Thousands of open clusters showcasing structural variety.
  • Hundreds of nebulae displaying detailed structures in bright nebulae.
  • Hundreds of galaxies showing distinct shapes, disk inclination, and spiral arms.
  • Planetary nebulae detail, with increased contrast using narrowband filters (e.g., OIII filters).
  • Subtle details in supernova remnants; under dark skies, faint color may be seen in bright planetary nebulae.

Operational Notes and Recommendations
Due to the large 305 mm mirror, objects are rendered far more clearly than in 20 cm or 25 cm telescopes. Consequently, image quality is sensitive to light pollution, atmospheric seeing, air purity, and optical collimation. Please consider these factors to achieve optimal results. With an f/4.9 focal ratio, high-quality astronomical eyepieces are essential.

Terrestrial Observations
For terrestrial viewing, an optional erecting lens is required to yield an upright image. Combined with an erecting lens and the stable Dobson mount, the telescope can be used for basic ground observations and smooth tracking of high-altitude cruising aircraft.
