Sky-Watcher Skyliner Classic 254/1200 Dobsonian Telescope

The Sky-Watcher Skyliner Classic 254/1200 Dobsonian telescope offers a perfect combination of a large aperture and ultimate ease of use. This powerful Newtonian reflector on a stable Dobsonian mount is specifically designed for astronomy enthusiasts seeking high-performance deep-sky views at an affordable price. Featuring premium Pyrex glass optics and a 254mm diameter, it opens up incredible opportunities for detailed exploration of nebulae, galaxies, and star clusters.

Key advantages

  • Large 254mm aperture: Delivers exceptional light-gathering capability and resolution for faint deep-sky objects.
  • Pyrex main mirror: Features a low thermal expansion coefficient, minimizing warping during cooldown and maintaining high geometric precision.
  • Smooth 2" Crayford focuser: Provides backlash-free, accurate focusing adjustments with a 1.25" adapter included.
  • Stable Rocker Box with Tension Control: Ensures simple, smooth manual tracking across both axes with adjustable resistance.
  • Incredible value for money: Highly favored by both beginners and experienced observers due to its simplicity and robust performance.

Product description

Dobsonian telescopes are among the most practical instruments in astronomy. They are of simple construction and yet a brilliant idea. They essentially consist of two parts: firstly the optics, which features a durable solid full tube design; and secondly the mount, a wooden box (also called a 'rocker box') which sits on the ground and into which the telescope is inserted. This design allows you to begin observing sessions immediately without first having to spend time setting up and aligning a complicated mount. The basic idea of the Dobsonian design came from the wish to have a big telescope at a low price—a wish that has succeeded brilliantly, forming a dedicated community focused on high performance at an accessible cost.

The N 254/1200 optics feature a diameter of 254 mm (10") and a focal length of 1200 mm, resulting in an aperture ratio of f/4.8. Such optics offer very high light-gathering power (1275x). In a reasonably dark sky, you can observe stars down to a magnitude of 14. With an aperture of 254 mm, you can reveal intricate details of deep-sky objects that remain hidden in smaller instruments. The secondary mirror struts are exceptionally thin, reducing diffraction. With a secondary mirror diameter of 58 mm, the optical obstruction is kept at a low 23%.

This telescope features a premium Pyrex mirror. This type of glass exhibits much smaller thermal expansion than commonly used BK7 glass (about 2X less). During the cooling phase, the mirror resists warping and retains its geometric shape far better, yielding excellent image quality right from the start. The mirror meets at least 75nm p.t.v., exceeding the Lambda/8 precision standard. With a Strehl Ratio of 0.8 or higher, the system is diffraction-limited, meaning its resolution is only restricted by the physics of light diffraction.

The Sky-Watcher rocker box is highly intuitive and easy to use. The telescope can be pointed in azimuth and altitude smoothly using just a couple of fingers, moving on specialized slide and pivot bearings. It remains perfectly stable in any position, ensuring highly enjoyable observing even at high magnifications. The Tension Control System lets you easily adjust the friction setting and resistance when moving the tube, tailoring the movement to your absolute preference.

While these instruments are primarily designed for visual observation—allowing you to resolve globular clusters and see rich structures in nebulae—basic lunar and solar photography is also possible with appropriate accessories (solar viewing requires an appropriate filter). For enhanced performance, purchasing additional eyepieces (such as 5mm and 14.5mm focal lengths), a Barlow lens, and a UHC filter is recommended.
