Product description

This genuine piece of moon rock, classified as NWA 10203, was detached from the Moon by a meteorite impact and eventually struck Earth in Northwest Africa (NWA), more precisely within the Sahara Desert. This specific meteorite was discovered in 2015. Out of the total global mass of approximately 40 kg of moon meteorites, only a third is available for sale, and the entire find of NWA 10203 comprises just 3.3 kilograms.

The sample size is approximately 5mm. The dimensions provided in the technical specifications refer to the protective display box in which the rock specimen can be safely stored and viewed.

Expert comment regarding proof of authenticity (Bernd Gährken):

The only institution that can officially homologate meteorites is the Meteoritical Society, based at the British Museum NH in London. All meteorites are centrally recorded there — including all finds from Antarctic expeditions, desert searches, historical falls, and discoveries. The data is thoroughly analyzed, numbered or named, and officially published in the annual Meteoritical Bulletin.

The recognition procedure is strictly defined: a sample from each meteorite find, along with all recorded location data, must be submitted to one of the few specialized university laboratories recognized by the MetSoc. The laboratory prepares thin sections of the piece for microscopic evaluation of its texture and composition, performs a comprehensive chemical analysis, and measures key minerals and critical isotopes. All gathered information is compiled into a detailed report proposing the appropriate meteorite subclass, which is then submitted to the Nomenclature Committee of the MetSoc.

Additional material must be archived for future research. The Nomenclature Committee, comprised of leading international meteorite specialists, evaluates the data for plausibility and unanimously accepts, rejects, or requests further analysis. Once recognized, the meteorite receives its official name or number, and its parameters are published in the biannual Meteoritical Bulletin. The Meteoritical Society and the participating laboratories operate on a strictly non-commercial basis. As an additional assurance of authenticity, the manufacturer is a registered member of the International Meteorite Collectors Association (IMCA).
